Ankle Instability

Does your Ankle feel unstable ?

Ankle joint is a hinge between the leg and the foot. There are ligaments on either side of the ankle joint complex along with the muscles which help in stabilization of the complex from either sides. Most ankle ligament injuries are caused when the foot twists so that the sole is pointing inwards. The twist force may cause a minor or major injury to the ligaments supporting to the ankle. This may or may not involve the bone or muscles. RICE is a common treatment in initial stages of ankle sprain and you should try and do the following -

R - Rest I - Ice C - Compression E - Elevation

If you feel that the pain and instability around the ankle is not getting better as quickly as you would expect, it might be a good idea to get some advice or treatment with a physiotherapist. A Physiotherapist can help you assess and diagnose your problem. Correct balance and strengthening program can actually help you to prevent future sprains. Physiotherapy interventions early in the stages of recovery for an ankle sprain can help you get back on your feet more quickly, with less pain along the way, and help you prevent a future injury of the same type. For prevention work or for treatment of an acute ankle sprain, contact your physiotherapist to determine an appropriate treatment plan.
